Football: Bring On Notre Dame
October 22, 2009
Western Michigan will be the first MAC team to play the Irish.
Mac Daily Staff Reports
Kalamazoo — Notre Dame had an opening in its schedule next season that it needed to fill and it made a surprising offer to use that slot — Western Michigan.
The two schools announced that they will meet on the gridiron on October 16, 2010 in what will be the Fighting Irish's first ever game against a MAC team.
"We had one opening left on our 2010 schedule and Western Michigan was able to move some things and get it done," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said. "There's always energy in the stadium when you play someone from not far away."
Although WMU has never played Notre Dame as a MAC member, the two schools did meet in 1919 and 1920 with the Fighting Irish coming away victorious both times. Current MAC members Akron (1910) and Miami (1909) also played ND before the inception of the conference.
In order to make the game work, Western Michigan had to move its scheduled date with Virginia Tech from 2010 to 2016.
