BOWLING GREEN – For one night, Western Michigan was on top of the college hockey world. The Broncos downed Bowling Green 4-1 and took over first place in the CCHA.
In WMU’s first game defending the top spot though, it was BGSU that had the last laugh. The Falcons scored twice in the third period, stealing a 2-1 win from the Broncos and knocking them out of first place.
Western Michigan (13-10-5, 10-7-3-3 CCHA) took the lead just 1:21 into the contest on a power play goal. Greg Squires took a pass from Mike Leone and snuck it into the net for the early 1-0 advantage.
Frank Slubowski made that lead last until the third period. The WMU goalie stopped 14 shots in the first two periods, helping a sluggish Bronco offense keep the lead.
Things changed in the third period though and the CCHA’s last place team gained the momentum. Camden Wojtala tied the game 6:10 into the period and then James McIntosh found the winner, scoring short-handed.
Bowling Green finished the season 1-2-1 against Western Michigan. The two teams played a home-and-home in December with WMU winning once in regulation and once in a shoot-out.
The Broncos are now tied with Miami in the standings. The RedHawks topped Northern Michigan 6-0 on Saturday, earning a weekend split with the Wildcats.
