MOUNT PLEASANT – The casual fan might not think that Central Michigan had to sweat out its 93-85 victory over Western Michigan. Early on though, it looked like the Broncos would win in a rout.
The Broncos came out strong and led 21-8 barely five minutes into the contest. Central Michigan (10-7, 2-1 MAC) turned things around
though, going on a 26-6 run that put CMU ahead 34-27. At the half, the Chippewas had a comfortable 41-34 edge and looked in control.
Midway through the second half, Western Michigan fought back, turning a 53-38 deficit into a one-point game. The Broncos (5-11, 2-1) couldn’t take the lead though, and wilted in the waning moments. The Chippewas pulled away thanks to a strong shooting effort from downtown. Central Michigan converted 10-of-20 three-pointers, giving CMU a much-needed boost to victory.
Maria Iaquaniello exploded for a 26-point performance in Western Michigan’s loss. She also hauled in six rebounds.
